Sheryl Grossman posted on Facebook, ”Chronic illness folks on Twitter are grieving today. A prominent health law activist, Erin Gilmer, took her life because her physical pain was too great and her doctors failed to intervene and provide adequate support / relief. It’s so hard to see because it so easily could’ve been me. It still could be. Up to 50 percent of chronic pain patients consider suicide to escape the unrelenting agony of their pain. A study published in 2006 similarly found that, relative to the general population, the risk of death by suicide appears to be at least doubled in chronic pain patients. Abled, healthy folks: chronic pain patients cannot do this work. We cannot shoulder the burden of living in agony and fighting to survive while also advocating for better laws, medicine, and societal treatment. That burden falls on you: the people in our lives who are supposed to give a damn. Because we all get sick. We all end in pain. Someday, this will be you too. Don’t scoll by. Don’t look away. Consider your self called in, abled people. What are you going to do about it?”..
