Chris Laybourne Death – Obituary

Great Coop Studios record producer, Chris Laybourne of Oceanside, New York passed away July 2021.  A talented musician known by many as ‘Crispy Chicken’.

Chris was the consummate band leader, and a musical mentor . He had a super sharp ear for musicianship, and recognized virtuosity in others. The cause of death was said to be Cancer.

”Sometimes life isn’t fair. Our friend Chris “Chrispy Chicken” Laybourne has lost his battle with cancer. He was an amazing musician and producer, always inspirational and just a cool guy. He was like a mad scientist at the board and always knew how to bring out the best in people in the studio. He was just great to be around.”   The Foschino Brothers posted on Facebook.

”So, on a more serious note: I don’t usually do this sort of thing because my trials and tribulations are…well..MY trials and tribulations (and, lots of the time, Josette’s). However, I am informed today that a warm, gentle, talented soul has left us. One Chris Laybourne.
I post this not for sympathy or whatever, but to say that, if you have friends that you are constantly finding yourself saying: “Yeah, let’s get together soon for a meal or something away from work and gigs and daily stuff”, then be sure to follow through and make those plans happen and happen sooner than later!
I have been fortunate to know and have worked with TTHHOOUUSSAANNDDSS of really great musicians in my life. Chris was one of a kind and what I would call a “pal”! He would always listen and usually always had something to respond with.
When he was on stage, he was in his “church”! You can see that in the attached picture with Omar Kabir, yet another great musician and, i’d love to say: friend. Musicians come and go but friends are rare. Let’s have that meal that we’ve been talking about!  Rest In Peace, “Crispy”!!” ….  Mark Mancini  posted on Facebook.
”I really struggled with this all day….
Chris Laybourne is the reason I became interested in mixing. David Wright introduced me to him years ago. Chris was family! I’m truly going to miss him. My very first project was recorded and mixed by him. We spent countless moments, on various projects, where he would teach me what he was doing. He gave me a crash course in ProTools. He gave me pointers and even helped me when I couldn’t figure it out. We would check in on each other and he supported me in anything I did musically.
Chris, words can never express what you meant to me and my family. We, as in everyone who came in touch with, will miss you dearly. Praying for the Laybourne Family. Sigh, sleep on my brotha.”   Cheryl Pepsii Riley   posted on Facebook.
”It’s just all too much! It has taken me all day to even attempt to post. Jesus! This Man, I’ve known for years. I’ve done awesome sessions at his studio!
He recorded n engineered my last independent project “Still Believe” as well as a few singles from my first independent project “Let Me Be Me”.
You always made time for me. I learned a lot abt recording n engineering, talking to you n watching you. Wasn’t just the music. We spoke of family often. The way you love your children…. I immediately thought of them  I know many call you Chrispy… I call you Coop. I will never forget our last convos and your kind words. Lots of Amazing music was birthed with you at Coop Studios. I’d like to Believe that is how we will keep your name n legacy alive.
Thank you so much for Everything Coop! Take your rest now. I know you got that Sax Blazin up there! Love you Man! Sleep in Peace, Power n Paradise” Donnell Williams  posted on Facebook.
”Incredibly saddened to hear the news of Chris Laybourne passing. Grateful to have gotten to know him and have the opportunity to work with him. RIP Brother, you will be greatly missed.
He recorded the last Johnny Mac Band album, ACE and lent his amazing talent to this track…”  Raymond Hauck  posted on Facebook.
