Juini Booth, jazz double-bass player who recorded and performed with many luminary jazz artists since the mid-1960s, passed away July 12, 2021. The legendary bassist Juini Booth died at the age of 73 due to health struggles.
Booth played on a couple of the jazz albums from the 1970s. The first is McCoy Tyner’s Atlantis, a double live album recorded at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco in 1974. The second is Larry Young’s Lawrence of Newark from 1973, an album that gave the jazz organ a whole new meaning. This was Larry Young’s first solo album in the 1970s after releasing a number of excellent albums on Blue Note in the 1960s and then joining the jazz rock revolution with Miles Davis, John McLaughlin and Tony Williams’ Lifetime.
”We sadly are learning of the passing of another jazz legend with roots in Buffalo. after apparent health struggles. Booth’s legendary status in jazz dates back to his 1960s dates with Eddie Harris and Art Blakely. Also performing with Gary Bartz, Freddy Hubbard, and Shelly Manne. In the mid-1970s, Booth was an integral part of McCoy Tyner’s recordings and performances. In his later years, Booth returned to Buffalo more frequently and engaged in performing in the free jazz movement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. DAMN…….. this can’t be happening.. Had the honor and pleasure of meeting Juini Booth last night at my show. Juini has played with various jazz legends such as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to Tony Williams Lifetime, including many others like Albert Ayler, Betty Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Chuck Mangione, Sun Ra, McCoy Tyner, and Randy Weston just to name a few. He told me he liked my drumming and if “Miles Davis were alive today he’d be proud” that is a statement that I will truly never forget.. I told him that my reading skills musically are not that great, he says to me “that’s ok I’ve never seen McCoy Tyner give Elvin Jones sheet music either. You’ll be fine young man.” That’s Deep stuff right there. Such a honor and pleasure finally meeting you Mr. Booth. I couldn’t do this without the help of my music peers in the Buffalo Music Scene. You all know who you are! I really have all of you to thank. I mean that sincerely.” Damone A-Miracale Jackson posted on Facebook.
