Ken Novak Sr Death – Obituary,  Ken Novak Sr Cause Of Death

Ken Novak Sr has passed away peacefully, Sr. came to Hopkins in 1955 and taught and coached at Hopkins through the 80’s. He contributed greatly to his community and country, he was an inspiration and mentor to many. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

“Really like this picture, that Coach Brock Tesdahl shared, of all the coaches of Hopkins on the bench from a season or two ago in Si Melby Hall at Augsburg — a great coaching staff around the father and son team of Ken Novak Sr. and Ken Novak Jr. — in a gym named for the father of Augsburg athletics that became thee focal point of basketball in the Twin Cities with its summer leagues.

Coach Novak Sr. passed away this week. I feel very sad for his wife, family, and the many former players that he impacted. Coach was always kind, took an interest in the players on the girls’ team, and watched many of their games.

Coach Sr. came to Hopkins in 1955 and taught and coached at Hopkins through the 80’s. He then mentored his son, Ken Novak Jr. into one of the most successful HS basketball coaches not just in Minnesota, but in the nation. Devotees of basketball were drawn to the Novaks. A style developed. An effort demanded. A standard maintained.

These Novak adherents, both assistant coaches and players, would then go on and become head coaches themselves running Coach Novak plays — using the same sayings. His former players would become coaches after their stints as players in college concluded. The beneficial butterfly effect from Coach Ken Novak Sr. and Ken Novak Jr. on Hopkins basketball player’s lives, both girls and boys, is inestimable.
In 1996 a new 5-court basketball gym was built at Hopkins — The Lindbergh Center. As Hopkins became a known as

a power house the Lindbergh Center was a nexus for basketball. Intense pickup, big HS playoff games, huge Breakdown showcases, and national AAU tournaments — all in the spacious Lindbergh Center. Reading the local Sun Sailor recently, it said that the “Lindbergh” name was being dropped off of the center’s nomenclature. Both Coach Novaks have spent so many hours in the Lindbergh Center teaching basketball. I would propose that the center be

renamed the Novak Center.
Like Si Melby Hall, a legendary Hopkins basketball moniker befitting a place known for hosting fabled basketball games: THE NOVAK CENTER! ”
