”DPS Special Agent Dustin Slovacek passed away this morning, Sept. 12, after battling COVID-19. ”Covid does not discriminate, and it’s still very much here. The vaccines give us hope, but we are not done.
Dustin’s passing hurts me on a deeper and personal level. The pain and death that surrounds covid is crippling. I’ve been working as a covid icu nurse for more than a year now. During that time, I worked at 6 hospitals, 3 states, and 5 cities. I’ve seen the way covid takes hold and sometimes doesn’t let go. My hands and heart are tired and hurting. I’m seeing more people around Dustin’s age who are being admitted to the ICU. They are leaving this world too soon. Families are left feeling empty and helpless. I’m seeing vaccinated individuals test positive, but I’ve seen very few of those on the ventilator.
Even if you are fully vaccinated, please continue to wear your mask. You can be infected and be asymptotic. If you are not vaccinated, definitely wear a mask. Please don’t make this a political issue. We need to spread awareness, compassion, and understanding. Please stop with the hate. Stop with the discrimination. Stop with the ignorance! Dustin’s life was precious. He will be missed by many. Rest In Peace…”

”He taught me how to properly hold and shoot my handgun and gave me the confidence I needed to get my CHL. I went hog hunting, fishing, and paintballing with him and the gang. I value those memories. He loved and was loved….”
