Gladys Shipman Greensboro Nc Obituary

Gladys Shipman Death – Obituary – Gladys Shipman of Greensboro, North Carolina, Former NC NAACP Vice President has passed away at 76 after a short illness on Monday, September 13, 2021. The Civil rights trailblazer and North Carolina businesswoman was a Civil rights leader and social justice advocate, she supported, sponsored and donated to many Greensboro and North Carolina organizations and businesses.

Shipman was the first woman to serve as vice president for the North Carolina Chapter of the NAACP and was also the first woman to serve as president of the organization’s Greensboro chapter. As one of the founding members of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, she worked tirelessly to make sure the lunch counter, where she protested segregation during the 1960 Sit-in Movement, would serve as a place for education and truth for generations to come…..According to information gathered.

Reports also say, Gladys F Shipman was a pioneer and elder in our community. Powerful business woman that took her passion of caring for others and turned it into one of the most successful business ventures for women the state has seen. She was always a supporter and offered advice and wisdom. Greensboro has lost a giant! My prayers and sympathy goes out to her entire family & all those who were touched by her.

She was born on Sept. 9, 1945, in Greensboro. During her life, she lived in Detroit and New Jersey, but she always made Greensboro, North Carolina, her home, She leaves behind six children, 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

”Words cannot express the profound sadness felt by the passing of our local Civil Rights Icon and past Greensboro Branch NAACP President Gladys Shipman. My prayers are extended to the Shipman Family!
I have known Mrs. Shipman since the time of being a student at North Carolina A&T State University when forming a student chapter on campus years ago. I would go across the street from Gibbs Hall to the then local Greensboro NAACP Branch office to gain insight, mentorship, and leadership in guiding fellow students in ways to advocate for the advancement of our communities.
From my college days in the 1990’s, to my many years at the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, until the very last moment, she has continued to be a guiding light in the efforts of civil and human rights. What a blessing it has been to know Mrs. Shipman. She leaves a legacy of service and community behind. May we always remember her and continue our journey towards justice, service, and equity!
The only thing left to say is THANK YOU!!…”

”With much love and honor I remember this great woman, Dear Sis. Gladys Shipman, an NAACP friend and warrior for justice.
She can truly say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
May God bless, comfort, and keep the Shipman family. Rest In Peace and Power Sis. Shipman! The Gatewood Family…”
