Death – Police make arrest in shooting death of man in SUV in North Long Beach – Press Telegram

Death – Obituary

A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting to death a homeless man in North Long Beach earlier this month, authorities said.

Police arrested Luis Barrios during a traffic stop in the area of 72nd Street and Orange Avenue Tuesday, Dec. 21, police said.

Prior to the traffic stop, detectives said, they gathered “significant evidence” against Barrios in the Dec. 18 shooting death of Abelardo Ramirez Bonilla, 46, who was found dead in the driver’s seat of his SUV in the area of 72nd Street and Atlantic Place, police said.

Barrios and Bonilla knew each other and had been hanging out throughout the day prior to the shooting, police said. The motive was still being determined, but detectives believed an ongoing personal dispute between the two men led to the shooting.

An arrest log entry indicated Barrios lived in Compton.

Bonilla, who police said was homeless, was found inside his SUV about 9:30 p.m., Dec. 18, after officers were flagged down by a resident who told them they heard a shooting nearby earlier that night. The resident pointed police to the area of the shooting and Bonilla was found with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Barrios was booked into jail on suspicion of murder and possessing a controlled substance for sale, police said. He was being held on more than $2 million bail, according to inmate records.

Detectives planned to hand the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration this coming week, police said.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
