MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A tragic Christmas morning shooting took the life of a little boy in Orange Mound and leaves those nearby scrambling for answers.

It happened as the boy was inside with his family, neighbors said Sunday morning, and the police investigation continues.

It happened in the 1000 block of Haynes Street, which is lined with houses and cars, and where one neighbor said he awoke to the sound of gunfire, before going outside and seeing the flashing blue lights of police vehicles.

That’s when Roger Parker said he rushed down the block to figure out what happened and spoke to the child’s family, whom he was informed that the boy was inside the house, playing video games.

The boy was shot in his back, Parker said.

No one answered the door at the home where both he and the police said the shooting happened.

Police declined to release further details about the circumstances of the shooting when asked by email Sunday morning.

The killing is one of at least 27 involving kids falling victim to homicide in Memphis this year, a number that dropped from 38 in 2020, according to data maintained by FOX13.

Parker said the neighborhood is home to a number of kids, adding that he has called it home for more than 50 years, and has gotten to know each of the kids by face but not name as he works his way around as a handyman.

“It makes you want to cry and all that,” Parker said.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
