Death – Imam found dead was a highly regarded member of Columbus’ Somali community

Death – Obituary

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The body of a missing Somali community leader has been identified by Columbus police after he was found inside a van on the northeast side of the city on Christmas eve.

“He leaves a legacy of just profound service to the community, he was a selfless man,” said Amina Barhumi, interim executive director of the Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio), a local American-Islamic civil rights group.

After his disappearance on Wednesday of last week, the Somali community was actively looking for Mohamed Hasan Adam, who served as an imam, or mosque leader within the Islamic faith.

His body was found inside a van off Joyce and Windsor avenues Friday afternoon, with police ruling the death a homicide.

His identity was officially confirmed by authorities on Sunday afternoon.

“I didn’t hear any public official condemning this or expressing any outrage. Where is the resources?” said Mahmoud El-Yousseph, a local Columbus resident.

Adam’s death is leading to questions in the Islamic community over how and why such a prominent figure in their faith was killed, with some calling for more resources toward finding whoever was responsible.

“Part of the reward that’s being offered is essentially to find who the perpetrators are,” Barhumi said.

CAIR-Ohio is offering a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in Adam’s death.

The organization is also asking the Columbus Police Department to bring justice in this case.

“There needs to be transparency in the process, the community deserves updates in terms of what’s happening, where the investigation is, and that is really required,” Barhumi said.

A crowdfunding campaign has been set up online for the family of Mohammed Hasan Adam.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Columbus police homicide division at 614-645-4730.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
