Portsmouth, NH – Ornella (Nella) Ellingwood (Macrelli) 97 passed away peacefully on Friday, December 17, 2021. Nella was born in Portsmouth, NH on November 16, 1924 to parents Cimbro and Celerina (Serafini) Macrelli. Her parents immigrated from Santarcangelo, Italy in 1922 and settled in Portsmouth’s North End.

She graduated from Portsmouth High School with the class of 1942. Nella was first married on November 21, 1942 to Michael Cichonski. During this time Nella studied business and worked as a bookkeeper. After her divorce to Cichonski, Nella moved to Phoenix, AZ. In Arizona she built her career working for American Express. She married her third husband Michael G. Ellingwood in Phoenix, AZ.

After the death of her father in 1986, she and Michael moved back to New England and resided with her brother Gardo on Walton Road in New Castle, NH for the remainder of her life. She made many new friends over the years in New Castle whom she adored very much.

She is survived by her brother Gardo Macrelli of New Castle, NH; stepson Michael G. Ellingwood Jr of Myrtle Beach, SC and stepdaughter Michelle Ellingwood of Orlando, FL and cousins Terry Smith & Irene Grand of Strafford, NH. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband Michael G Ellingwood.

A celebration of life will be scheduled in Spring of 2022.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
