Death – Obituary

Various outlets are paying tribute to Star Trek alums who passed away in 2021.

It’s crazy, to think in 2021 that William Shatner at 90 years old continues to make headlines with his acting and his personal life. Not only did Shatner put out a new romantic comedy but he also went to space. It’s insane and every time we see him, we see the benefits of modern medicine in action. Unfortunately, not every Star Trek veteran, be it, actor or crew member, will age as well as Shatner has.

In fact, in 2021, Star Trek fans lost quite a number of cast and crew. Since Star Trek has been around for 60 years, it’s expected that at some point we’ll have to say goodbye to those we grew up watching. That doesn’t mean that it ever gets easier when someone so beloved, who’s responsible for so many great memories, says goodbye for the last time.

Among the most known who passed this year was Christopher Plummer, who portrayed one of the best villains in Trek history, and was the only non-Starfleet captain interviewed in the documentary for The Captains.

As you can see, there are many outlets that are saying goodbye one more time to those we lost in 2021. Trek Culture put together a very detailed list in the video above. They weren’t the only ones with Daily Star Trek also putting together a heart-touching piece.

With the end of the year right around the corner and notable names lost, it makes sense to take a second and remember all that has changed this year. Let’s be grateful that we still have the legends we have because we never know when the inevitable will come.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
