Death – Family identifies 12-year-old boy shot and killed on Christmas Day – FOX13 News Memphis

Death – Obituary

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — His name was Artemis Rayford, but to those who loved him most, he was simply Sean, a 12-year-old boy who was always smiling and loved to dance.

Sean was shot and killed on Christmas Day morning at a house on Haynes St., a tragedy that his grandmother Joyce Newsom is still trying to wrap her brain around.

ORIGINAL REPORT: 12-year-old boy shot and killed overnight in Orange Mound, police say

“I don’t see how in the world he could have gotten shot in the chest. I don’t understand that,” Newsom said. “It’s just a sad situation for our family and for this to happen on Christmas Day.”

Newsom said that Sean lost his life as the result of an argument at a nearby store. According to the grandmother, a stray bullet from that argument hit Sean, leading him to be rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. An unnecessary tragedy, the Newsom said.

But, in this time of turmoil, Newsom is remembering the things about Sean that made so many people smile like his wonderful voice.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
