Joe Russell Shell

Hartford, CT

Joe Russell Shell fell asleep in death on November 24, 2021. He was born on September 4, 1945 to Morris (Mordie) and Eliza (Liza) Shell. He was the oldest of five and his surviving siblings are Morris Shell Jr. (Beverly), Sandra Elizabeth Shell, Susie Shell King, and Sharon Shell Mixon (Tyrone). He was a graduate of Tompkins High School class of 1963. As a teenager he enjoyed playing the saxophone and assembling model cars. He began his spiritual career at the early age of 13 after being baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness on June 24, 1958. Upon graduating from high school, he became a fulltime pioneer and moved to Manchester, Georgia where there was a great need for volunteer ministers. He continued to serve and volunteer his time, energy, and finances toward assisting others to an “accurate knowledge” of Bible truths.

He is survived by is wife Dannette, children, Jason Shell, Michael Shell, and Lydia Shell; grandchildren, Cassie, Maxwell, Alexandria, Devin, Jordan and Jade.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
