Death – Obituary

 Jharsuguda: Brajrajnagar MLA and former Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly Kishore Mohanty passed away on Thursday. The senior BJD leader suffered a cardiac arrest today evening and breathed his last at a private hospital in Jharsuguda.

Mohanty was 63. A veteran political leader of western Odisha, Mohanty was elected to the Assembly from Jharsuguda thrice. He was the Government Chief Whip for four years during 2004 to 2008 and also elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Mohanty was first elected to the Assembly in 1990 and has been a key leader from western Odisha during his career spanning 30+ years. A former Minister, Speaker, Western Odisha Development Council Chairman, Mohanty, a native of Jharsuguda donned many hats and discharged his responsibilities successfully.

In 2019 elections, he won the Brajrajnagar assembly seat. Political leaders and people from all walks of life have mourned the death of Mohanty.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
