Dublin GAA fans are “absolutely heartbroken” over the tragic death of 15-year-old Jack Daniel.

Young Jack of Daleview, Ballybrack, passed away after a 14-month battle against cancer on December 28, 2021.

Those attending the funeral are urged to wear the county colours.

A Dublin GAA fans Facebook page led the tributes to the Dublin supporter who spent his time on Hill 16 at Croker.

They posted: “Absolutely heartbroken to hear of the passing of Dublin fan, Jack Daniel, after a brave 14 month battle against cancer.

“Thoughts and prayers are with Nigel, Geraldine and all Jack’s family at this sad time. Croke Park and the Hill will never forget you Jack. You touched many hearts in your young life.”

Cabinteely Football Club also posted: “All at the club are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of former player Jack Daniel at the young age of just 15 after a brave battle with illness.

“A great kid and a very supportive family. We extend our sympathies to his parents Geraldine and Nigel, and his many friends.”

Jack is the dearly beloved son of Geraldine and Nigel. He will be missed by his grandparents Gerald and Lena, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and a large circle of friends.

The removal from his home will take place on Friday, December 31 at 10:50am and will arrive at the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Churchview Road, Killiney at 11:05am.

The funeral will begin at 11:15am and Jack will be laid to rest at Shanganagh Cemetery, Shankill.

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject's life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
