Death – Obituary

LaVera Henderson passed away peacefully at age 97 on December 20, 2021 at Legend of Hutchinson. She is survived by her niece Michelle Beck, nephew Gary Beck, cousin Susan Deines-Hanson and son-in-law Wayne Henderson.

LaVera was born and raised as one of two children by her parents, Clara Gilley-Beck and Charles Clinton Beck, both of Kinsley, Kansas. Her brother Charles Beck, passed away in 2012 in California.

After graduating from Kinsley High School in 1943 LaVera moved to Wichita to work for the Cessna Aircraft Company, where she earned the coveted Army Navy E Award for her contributions. After the war she moved to Plevna, Kansas to operate an independent grocery store, where she met her husband, Gene Washburn, formerly of McPherson, Kansas. Together they owned and operated Gene’s Grocery and lived in Hutchinson for 33 years until Gene passed away in 1972. LaVera continued to operate Gene’s Grocery until she retired in 1975. In 1974 she married widower Raymond Henderson, formerly of Pretty Prairie. Together they lived in Hutchinson until Raymond’s passing in 2017.

She was a member of the Kinsley chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, since 1946.

LaVera will be interred with her family at the Hillside Cemetery in Kinsley.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
