Kathryn Theresa Hudson Carpenter (60), of Purvis, passed away on December 18, 2021. Burial is in Fillingame Cemetery, and Moore Funeral Services handled arrangements.

Doris Easley (63), of Lumberton, passed away on December 26, 2021. Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 2 at Trinity Funeral Services in Lumberton. 

Carl L. Helton Jr. (72), of Petal, passed away on December 23, 2021. Burial is in Highland Cemetery, and Moore Funeral Services handled arrangments.

Gary Herrin (75), of Purvis, passed away on December 23, 2021. Burial is in Boone Cemetery, and Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Ronald Edward Keller (72), of Hattiesburg, passed away on December 24, 2021. Burial is in Highland Cemetery, and Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Dorris Sue Polk Lewis (80), of Sumrall, passed away on December 24, 2021. Services will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30 at Jones and Son Chapel in Hattiesburg with visitation beginning at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at a later date in the Biloxi National Cemetery. 

Robert Henry Madden Jr. (53), of Purvis, passed away on December 22, 2021. Burial is in Chambliss Cemetery, and Moore Funeral Services handled arrangements.

Evon Miller (82), of Purvis, passed away on December 27, 2021. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 31 at Baxterville Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be the night before, Thursday, December 30, from 5:00 p.m. — 8:00 p.m. Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Lonnie M. Pettiegrew (62), of Hattiesburg, passed away on December 27, 2021. Forrest Funeral Home is handling arrangements. 

Asa Jefferson Sanford (64), of Sumrall, passed away on December 13, 2021. Burial is in Santee Baptist Church Cemetery, and Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home handled arrangements.

James Ralph “Jimmy” Schrader Jr. (55), of the Dixie Community, passed away on December 22, 2021. A memorial service will be held at a later date, and Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

John Shedd (85), of Lumberton, passed away on December 27, 2021. Burial is in Lumberton City Cemetery, and Trinity Funeral Services handled arrangements.

Darryl Shelton (87), of Petal, passed away on December 22, 2021. Burial is in John Odom Cemetery, and Moore Funeral Services handled arrangements.

Dorothy Mae Clark Watts (91), of Purvis, passed away on December 22, 2021. Burial is in Highland Cemetery, and Moore Funeral Services handled arrangements.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
