Rita Steele Pass, 84, of Graham, passed away on Monday 12/27/2021, at Peak Resources of Alamance. A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Prince O’Neal Pass and the daughter of Edwin “Jack” Holt Steele and Dorothy Wilson Steele, both deceased.

Rita was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church. She retired from Lucent Technologies. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend and neighbor.

She is survived by her daughters, Edlene Pass Martin and husband, Tom; Gina Pass Turner and husband Gary; Jayme Pass Williams and husband, Mitch; Amy Pass Singleton and friend, Joseph; her cherished grandchildren, Chandler Turner and wife, Suzanne; Benjamin Martin and wife, Erin; Emory Turner; Greyson Williams; Amber Williams; Shelley Mason-Fox; Jasmine Singleton and Keyera Singleton; her great grandchildren, Wade Turner, Boulder Martin and Ava Claire-Mason; her sister, Becky S. Shoffner and her son, Ron Shoffner; along with numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother in law, Ronald Shoffner and a grandson, Zachary Martin.

A private graveside service was held to celebrate Rita’s life.

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
