Murray S. Cohen

Murray S. Cohen, scientist and entrepreneur, died on Monday at the age of 96. Born in Brooklyn in humble circumstances, he attended Stuyvesant High School and Brooklyn College, served in the Air Force in World War II, went on to earn his PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Missouri, and headed up a group of aerospace scientists at Reaction Motors, a division of Thiokol, working on early rocket propellants in the emerging space program. After spending time as a research scientist and executive at a number of major companies, Cohen started his own chemical company, Epolin, at the age of 60, taking it public in the 1990s.

In 1947, he married Ruth Marantz with whom he had two devoted daughters. He and Ruth, a French teacher at Morristown High School for 30 years, resided in Morristown, NJ. After her death in 1998, he married Myrna Moran, a clinical social worker, with whom he shared a joyful retirement. A man of extraordinary curiosity and intellect, he enjoyed literature, art, music, gardening, photography, and travel. In addition to his wife Myrna and his daughters, Paula (Alan Penziner) and Rosetta (Samuel Scheer), he is survived by his sister, Edith, and three grandchildren. Due to Covid, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
