Olga Gietl Marr 1924 – 2022

Springfield, IL—Olga Gietl Marr, 97, of Springfield, died at 7:55 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at Cedarhurst of Springfield.

Olga was born on July 10, 1924, in Auburn, the daughter of Emmanuel and Assunta (Micheli) Paoli. She married Walter “Boots” Gietl in 1946. He preceded her in death on December 9, 1984. Olga then married Milburn F. Marr on November 22, 1986. He preceded her in death on June 7, 2013.

Olga worked for Sangamon County as a receptionist for 23 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary #743, Homemaker – Jerome Unit, Brinkerhoff Auxiliary Club, and the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Mary’s Church in New Berlin.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Guerino and Guido “Jim” Paoli.

Olga is survived by her children, Janice Egizii of Springfield, Judy (Kelly) Conger of Bettendorf, IA, and Gary Gietl of Bonita Springs, FL; stepchildren, Barbara (James) Lestikow, Ronald (Marcia) Marr, Martin (Sheila) Marr, and David (Patricia) Marr; grandchildren, Lisa (Andy Rogers) Vannerson, Lori (Michael) Cadden, Nicole (Nathan) Olds, Sarah (Kosi) Campbell, Samantha (Charles) Henness, and Todd (Christina) Gietl; 10 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Church of the Little Flower, 800 Adlai Stevenson Dr., Springfield, IL. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Allen Kemme officiating. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.

Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Calvary Cemetery.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
