Mrs. Betty Runelle Hurst Steadman, age 93 of Dalton, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2022 after a year of declining health. At the time she was residing at Regency Park Health and Rehab Center.

She was born in Oliver, Ga. on Dec. 17, 1928 to Thomas Hurst and Rozzie Hodges Hurst. She received her R.N. degrees at Ga. While working she also raised six children. She was a person of deep faith and always very active in the church. Her sincere compassion for those who were less fortunate in life was a manifestation of her belief in leading a Christ-focused life. She was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and frequently sang solos as a part of the church service while she was married to her pastor husband. Her primary joy in life was her children, and she remained close to them and their families. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings at her home during holidays and other special occasions and was truly the center of her family. She leaves with her children many joyful memories of her time with them – as youngsters and as adults. She also loved visiting her siblings and their families in Savannah, Ga.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
