A construction worker died after he was trapped on the job in Mississippi, news outlets reported.

The 33-year-old was working at a construction site when officials said dirt collapsed beneath him. Other workers escaped, but Matthew Miller was covered in 20 feet of debris, according to WAPT and WJTV.

Miller’s body was found about four hours after crews responded to the collapse, which happened late Tuesday, Jan. 11, the Jackson Fire Department told news outlets. The incident was reported near Livingston Road and Stonewall Street.

“We mourn all deaths that occur in Jackson, but it is particularly heartbreaking when someone dies while performing their job responsibilities,” Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said in a statement obtained by WLBT. “I want the Miller family to know myself and the City mourns his tragic death and will keep them in our prayers.”

The Jackson Police Department is investigating, and its officers planned to interview other employees who were at the scene, news outlets reported.

The city’s fire department and the Hinds County coroner’s office didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Jan. 12.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
