Dorothy J. Messenger age 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday January 8, 2022 at the memory care facility Symphony in Mentor. She tested positive for Covid on December 30th and with all her other ailments, her 97 year old body and her spirit lost the battle. By God’s grace, she joined her late husband Jack and her son John in heaven and is now at peace.

She was born June 7, 1924 the daughter of Ralph and Majorie Turney. She was a 1942 graduate of Rochester High School. During her life she had many different jobs in retail. She started working at the New Brighton Wage Tax Office in 1973 and retired in 1984. She married the love of her life, John W. Messenger Sr. in 1946. They had a son, John in 1948 and in 1954, they built a home in New Brighton, Pa. where they raised their family and made many long lasting friends. In 1996 she sold her home in Pa. and bought one in Painesville, Ohio to be near her son’s family. She was the best mother, grandma and mother in law that a family could ask for.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter in law, Arlene and grandson Derek.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Majorie Turney, her brother Ralph Turney, her great nephews Ronald Jeffers and Robert Jeffers, her nephew Richard Jeffers, her sister Helen Jeffers Hobbs, her sister Thelma Rambo, her husband John W. Messenger SR. who passed away in 1989, and her son John W. Messenger JR. who passed away August 31, 2021.

Friends will be received from 12 PM to 2 Pm Sunday January 16, 2022 at the Saul-Gabauer Funeral Home, 273 Route 68, Rochester, Pa. A small service will follow at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Dorothy’s honor to Perry United Methodist Church, 3875 Main Street, Perry, Ohio 44081.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
