Death – Pensioner in Mercedes dies after crash with tractor in Nairn

Death – Obituary

A man has died after a collision involving his Mercedes Benz and a JCB tractor on a Scots road on Wednesday.

The 78-year-old’s Mercedes Benz A250 hatchback collided with the tractor at around 5.05pm on January 12 on the A96 at Auldearn.

Emergency services, including a rapid response ambulance, rushed to the incident and the road was closed.

Sadly, the Mercedes driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity has not been released by police. The tractor driver was uninjured.

Following the smash, east of Nairn in the Highlands, police kept the road closed for over eight hours as they investigated.

Officers have now issued an appeal for information as they seek to ascertain the circumstances of the collision.

Members of the public who witnessed the collision, or may have captured it on their dashcams, are asked to get in touch.

Sergeant Ewan Calder, of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit, said: “At this time, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased, following their tragic loss.

“As we continue our enquiries, we’d ask anyone with information or any potential dashcam footage to please come forward.

“If you were in the area or believe you may have seen either of the vehicles prior to the incident, you can speak with officers on 101, quoting incident 2255 of 12 January.”

The tragedy comes days after a five-car pile-up elsewhere on the A96.

Miraculously, nobody was injured in the mass smash west of Elgin, at 8.50am on January 10.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject's life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
