Death – Teen shot dead Wednesday night in Birmingham public housing community

Death – Obituary

A teenager was found shot to death Wednesday night on the sidewalk of a public housing community on Birmingham’s west side, police said.

Just after 8 p.m., officers with Birmingham police’s Community Safety Partnership responded to calls of multiple rounds fired in the 2900 block of John Bryan Road in the Kimbrough Homes complex, said police spokesman Sgt. Rod Mauldin.

Officers found the victim — 18-year-old Birmingham resident De’Undray Nakil Haggard — outside an apartment on the sidewalk suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, Mauldin said. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:30 p.m., according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Mauldin on Thursday said the preliminary investigation indicates Haggard met the suspect at the location. During the interaction, the suspect shot the victim multiple times and fled on foot.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone who saw or heard anything related to Haggard’s slaying was asked to call Crimestoppers at 205-254-7777.

What Is An Obituary

In national newspapers an obituary (obit for short) is a news article that reports the recent death of a prominent person. Although it tends to focus on positive aspects of the subject’s life this is not always the case. According to Nigel Farndale, the Obituaries Editor of The Times: “Obits should be life affirming rather than gloomy, but they should also be opinionated, leaving the reader with a strong sense of whether the subject lived a good life or bad; whether they were right or wrong in the handling of their public affairs.”

In local newspapers, an obituary may be published for any local resident upon death. A necrology is a register or list of records of the deaths of people related to a particular organization, group or field, which may only contain the sparsest details, or small obituaries. Historical necrologies can be important sources of information.
