Eliot Wadopian Death – Obituary – Master Bassist, incredible Grammy winning musician, brilliant music professor, Eliot Wadopian of Asheville, North Carolina has suddenly passed away at 63 September 12, 2021. Eliot grew as musician and as a man and an expert in judo, he went on to become the principal bass player in a couple of different symphonies, and was the rock in a fusion band.
His talent was recognized by Paul Winter, and Eliot went on to win a couple of Grammys with the Consort and played a number of times at the Winter Solstice concerts at St. John’s Cathedral in NYC. His current band was Free Planet Radio, an amazing trio of stellar musicians

”Yesterday morning, with no knowledge of my dear friend Eliot Wadopian’s sudden death, a bald Eagle circled our boat at Lake Santeetlah for a long time. I now believe it was Eliot. I’ve never seen a bald Eagle until yesterday.
When my mother died, a pileated woodpecker and a hawk flew together and landed on a limb above my welding studio and cackled together for a long time. I’d never seen that happen in my life but since my mother made friends with all sorts of folks over her lifetime and always told great jokes, I was convinced those two birds were my mother and someone she’d known, telling tall tales together.
Eliot was one of my favorite people on this earth. We traveled with Howard Hanger entertaining the troops in Japan, Korea, Asia and his dear friend David Mcnabb played the drums. Eliot was always so happy when I saw him. He was the kind of gentle giant who brought joy everywhere he went, and getting him laughing always filled my heart. I, like the rest of the world who were lucky enough to know him, am in shock. I’m so glad I have this lake and good friends for the week. Come back around bald Eagle!….”
”A great friend, an incredible Grammy winning musician, a champion of my cartoon work, and a lovely man has died. Back in the 70s, I played guitar. A Yamaha FG-140. I hooked up with another friend, John Randolph, and we started looking for a bass player.
Over at Newfound School, where a lot of our friends went, they were putting on a show called Aesop’s Fallibles. They needed a bass player, and they handed a bass to Eliot Wadopian and said, “Learn this.”
Boy, did he learn it. Not so much at first. He would go off into some weird key and say, “It’s jazz, man.” When it really was a mistake.
Eliot became our bass player, and we called ourselves Uncle Wiggly’s String Band. Now I’m the sole survivor of that ensemble.
Over the years, . He will be impossible to replace. Over the years, though we lived in the same town, we saw less and less of each other. Mostly he would come into where I was working, and we would exchange a hug and a few words.
But our bond stayed as strong as ever, and if I ever loved anybody it was that big bear of a man, a devoted father and grandfather, an incredible musician, and a loving husband….”
Eliot Wadopian, Master Bassist, impeccable musician, brilliant music professor and great friend has died. I learned of his death just now on Facebook. I spoke with him last week about a church gig that he wanted me to do in Charlotte, NC. I’m devastated, saddened, shocked and numb right now. He’s performed with some of the most famous, amazing and innovative Jazz artists in the world. He was my Jazz ensemble profess at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in the early 1990’s. He was the most down to earth and kindest musicians on earth. We have kept in contact with each other for 30 years. This is not a good day, I’m sobbing. I’ll miss him greatly.
